How has the Laurier MBA help your career?
The Laurier MBA has broadened my career possibilities. The curriculum has introduced me to new ideas and innovative processes that I can apply in a professional setting. The case based format has created a unique learning structure that has strengthened my ability to dissect situations and problem solve in the workplace. Outside of the classroom the career development office has been an integral component in my career progression. They have been readily available to provide career advice and facilitate interview preparation sessions. Overall, the MBA has allowed me to now be considered for positions that require a master’s degree and stand-out to those organizations that recognize the practical value that comes from it.

What opportunities has your MBA degree provided?
The Laurier MBA has been an excellent testing ground to learn about new subjects. I have been able to customize my degree to make the most of this learning opportunity. I have pursued new courses that were different than those in my commerce undergraduate degree as well as been exposed to subjects distinct from my professional experience. The learning opportunities outside the classroom combined with studying in Canada’s technology hub have rounded out this degree. The Blackberry pilot project, completing the not-for-profit component, participating in graduate organizations like Net Impact, and attending executive guest speaker series are just a few examples.

What have you like most about your Laurier experience?
The most beneficial component has been the opportunity to meet other people. Through class discussions, social activities, and professional networking events I have been able to learn about different industries and jobs that I wouldn’t have necessarily considered before. Two academic experiences that stand out are the BU610 consulting project that provides the chance to apply classroom learning to help a real company and the BU701 course that introduces sustainability topics. Laurier has begun to brand a greener curriculum through new on campus organizations promoting greener initiatives, partnering with community organizations, and recognizing the environment as an important factor for a profitable strategy. The diverse backgrounds accepted into the program have provided unique learning opportunities that have challenged and ultimately progressed my abilities to make a significant impact in my future positions.

What are your career aspirations?
I would like to work in a position that involves research and development. I enjoy summarizing past events and formulating my findings to aid in project development through preventing reoccurring mistakes. I will pursue career opportunities in project management in the public services sector. The MBA has introduced me to possible positions within the government at both provincial and federal levels.
